Diablo 3 Auction House Selling Guide

Since the release of Diablo 3, many players in the community have expressed their concern and dissatisfaction with the Auction House – from both a front-end user experience perspective, the fact that the Real Money Auction House (RMAH) has been continuously postponed and overall stability issues causing some players to lose items and gold into the glitchy void that is the current auction house.

All these concerns aside, there is a way to effectively use the auction house to both acquire items you need at reasonable prices and to sell your items for a healthy profit. This article will get into both the buying side and the selling side of the auction house.

Selling Items on the Diablo 3 Auction House:

1) Acquiring/Farming items that are desirable:

The first step of course is to have an item that you want to sell and people want to buy. The best and easiest way to do this is to pump up your magic find and do farming runs. Below is a short excerpt from my article “The Best Ways to Farm Gold

Obviously you can do dungeon runs with +gold find, level 60 stacks and get nice pickups. But some dungeons are better than others. Some dungeons have more elites than others and therefore can give you +MF/GF much faster. Below are a few that work out well for me:

  • Act III: Kill Azmodan: Start in the Arreat Gate for your stacks. Once you reach 5, head on down to kill Azmodan. He drops lots of blues!
  • Act 1: Legacy of Cain: Take your WP to the “Old Ruins” – find the dank cellar. The champion boss in there drops a ton of gold, and often times good gems.

2) Evaluating desirability of items:

Often times, the items that you want and work for you will be ones that are desirable to other players. Sometimes it’s difficult to understand what stats are good for other classes of heros, and that’s where some research will come in. However, there are broad stats that are always desirable and some that aren’t. Please use the below guide as a general rule of thumb; of course, one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure, so this guide will not apply in all situations.

General Stats that are desirable:

  • Magic Find
  • Gold Find
  • Health Globe Life Increase +2500 HP
  • Pickup Radius +7 yards
  • Experience for Monster Kills (for items less than level 60)
  • +Vitality, +Life%
General Stats that are non-desirable:
  • Ignore durability loss
  • Reduce Level Requirement
  • Life Regeneration < 10 per second

3) Diablo 3 Auction House Item Pricing Strategy:

Pricing Strategy on the Diablo 3 Auction House currently presents us with some of the best opportunities to make gold. This is mainly due to the fact that most people do not have a strategy nor are they willing to take a few minutes to do some research before pricing their items. Because of this, players who are putting any effort will be able to capitalize on this fact.

Step 1: Find similar items for sale on the Auction House

Use the crude search functionality to search for items similar to yours. Make sure you use all the fields available, including level range, stats with hard numbers (ie if your Item has +75 Dexterity, make sure you put minimum value of ~75 in your search).

Step 2: Order by Buyout Price

Since the auction house doesn’t let you order by Bid or Time left on Auction, your best bet at this point is to order by Buyout price. Usually, the first few pages will have N/A on buyout price, so continue to scroll through the pages until you start seeing the smaller Buyouts. Blizzard has also included items that have recently been sold, ordered by buyout price. Once you see some items that have sold in a specific buyout range, you know where you should be playing.

Step 3: Set your price competitively relative to the cheapest buyout price

Most people who are buying higher level items in the Buyout price will take a few minutes to try to find the best deal. Make sure the item you’ve priced is in-line or even cheaper than the cheapest similar item through your research.

Follow the above guide and you’ll be on your way to riches using the Diablo 3 Auction House!
